eaH Emeritus Member Frank Hermann, was honored with HCES’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Engineer’s Banquet on Saturday February 24th. He was also recognized by eaH at a special luncheon held on Friday February 23th at the Hoakalei Country Club.

Topic: “Energy Equity or Energy Divide when Fighting Climate Change ”
John returns to eaH to tell eaH about two IEEE Humanitarian projects that demonstrate with 4 case studies how to bring Energy Equity and Resilience/Safety to Native Hawaiian communities on Molokai, Native Hawaiian Homesteaders living off-grid and Native Hawaiian low-income renters without access to rooftop solar. For Homesteaders, Solar + Battery and energy efficient household appliances were used. For low-income renters a Plug-n-Play Solar-Battery generator, ground mount solar array and wind turbine with IoF (Internet of Things) digitized smart devices for monitor and control were used. Energy burdens were reduced by up to 91% and 65% respectively.

eaH's past President will tells about reflective roofs and walls, including non-white coatings, which are perhaps the most resource-efficient and cost-effective means of cooling Hawai‘i’s homes and buildings. Howard has been the State’s leader in drafting Hawaii’s energy code for the last 30+ years, which includes the latest recommendations and requirements on energy saving coatings for buildings and homes.
